So you have made it through the first couple weeks of dorm life
at Sac State and have made some great new friends and found ways
to get along with your new roommate. So it's time to celebrate
right? So you have decided to through a small party inviting a
"few" of your closest new friends. There are some things you
should keep in mind if you want to through a dorm party. Most
of them are common sense, but when you are three sheets to the
wind, common sense won't be your forte.
DO
keep your list of invites small: Remember that small cube of a
room has a maximum capacity of like 8 people. So if you want to
try and squeeze the entire floor into your dorm room, feel free
to do so. However, if you are claustrophobic, this may not be a
good idea. If you can, buddy up with someone with either a
single room or double deluxe room. There tends to be more
space.
DON'T
keep your door open: Yes you want more and more people to enter
your fun filled room. But do you want your R.A to catch you?
Keeping your door open when you have alcohol in the room is a
write up waiting to happen. If the door is closed, people have
to knock to enter which leaves you time to hide all suspicious
evidence.
DO
keep in mind quiet
hours: It may be cool to party on a weeknight, but you are more
likely to be caught if your room is making lots of noise on a
school night than on a weekend. This also includes keeping your
music down as well.
DON'T
advertise:
In the dorms, word travels fast and will eventually end up
reaching your R.A. If you scream to your buddy down the hall
that you are having a party Friday night, everyone in listening
range will hear that and someone is bound to tell. Since
usually everyone in the dorms has an email address, that could
work. And calling people from one room to another is free, so
that is also an option. Avoid going door to door.
DO
cover and protect your stuff: I am not saying cover everything
you own in garbage bags. But spills and puking are bound to
happen and it will be really hard to explain to mom why there is
a huge "jungle juice" stain on your $300 comforter. It may also
be wise to invest in some sort of carpet cleaner in case someone
misses the garbage can.
DON'T
be
obvious: So if you are invited to a BYOB party in room 316 in
Jenkins, don't go strolling up the stairs with a keg or bottles
of beer. I advise either putting mixed drinks in sports bottles
of some sort and get cups for anything else. Also, keep drinks
hidden.
DO
keep an eye on your friends: If you notice someone is having a
little more than you know they can handle, take the drink away
and send them to bed. You don't need a fatality in your dorm
room. That can lead to some serious problems from both the
dorms and the police department. Always keep some sort of food
on hand so people can balance food and alcohol so they don't
destroy their stomach.
DON'T
be
stupid: Duh! There are some pretty dumb moves you can do when
throwing a party. They include people destroying your smoke
detector so they can smoke in your room. This will leave you
with a mighty big fine at the end of the year and one nasty
smell in your room. Don't let anyone near the fire alarm
either. If it's pulled, you are all in deep trouble.
There are other alternatives to having a get together in your
abode. Things like a movie night, poker night without the money
thing, and so on without the use of alcohol. But if you really
want to drink; the dorms may seem like a good place, but I would
stay away from having one there too often. Especially if you
are under age. So be smart, but don't let that keep you from
having a good time.
